Woman found dead after fire at Toms River's Highland Plaza Apartments

Investigators traced the late-night blaze to careless smoking on a living room couch, according to the prosecutor's account. Red Cross New Jersey said it is helping five people.

TOMS RIVER — A woman died after fire broke out in a second-floor apartment at the Highland Plaza Apartments in Toms River late on Oct. 23, and investigators have blamed careless smoking, New Jersey 101.5 reported.

Firefighters were called to the complex on Highland Parkway at about 11:20 p.m., according to the station. When police officers and firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the unit. Firefighters then searched inside and found the woman dead on the floor, according to the account of Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer's office, as reported by New Jersey 101.5.

Officials have not released her name. They are holding it until her family has been notified, the station reported. Its report did not give her age.

Investigators determined that the fire started on a couch in the living room and was caused by careless smoking, New Jersey 101.5 reported. The prosecutor's arson squad handled the case with the county sheriff's crime scene unit, Toms River police detectives and the township's fire prevention bureau.

Red Cross New Jersey said in a post on X that it was giving five people help with temporary housing, food, clothing and other urgent needs, according to the station. The report did not say whether those five people lived in the apartment that burned or in neighboring units.

New Jersey 101.5 is the only outlet whose reporting on the fire was available for this story.
