Comcast notice lists 119 New Jersey job cuts, with Absecon and Toms River sites affected
The reductions, set for early 2027, are part of a broader company overhaul that also eliminates hundreds of jobs at Comcast's Philadelphia headquarters.
TRENTON — Comcast plans to eliminate 119 jobs in New Jersey, including at company locations in Absecon and Toms River, according to a layoff notice the cable giant filed with the state Department of Labor.
The cuts are scheduled to take effect Jan. 27, 2027, New Jersey 101.5 reported in an article that 92.7 WOBM and 94.3 The Point also carried. The Philadelphia Inquirer also reported the 119 New Jersey positions.
According to the stations, the notice names service centers and offices in Absecon, Toms River, Vineland and West Deptford, and jobs will also be lost in Burlington, Camden, Mercer and Union counties. The filing does not say how many positions will go at each location. Only the stations reported that the New Jersey workers do not appear to have been offered hiring commitments like those in Comcast's Pennsylvania notice.
The New Jersey reductions are one piece of a wider restructuring. Comcast told Pennsylvania regulators it will cut 634 jobs at its Center City headquarters, with the first of those taking effect Dec. 31, The Inquirer and New Jersey 101.5 reported. The company also reported eliminating 159 positions in Washington state and 82 in California, while expecting to create more than 1,100 jobs through the overhaul, over 500 of them in Philadelphia, the two outlets reported.
Federal law requires large employers to alert regulators when layoffs will affect more than 50 workers at one site.
The Inquirer reported that the cost-cutting effort includes spending on artificial intelligence, and that executives said on an earnings call they intend partly to rely on AI agents to handle customers. Employees told the newspaper that Comcast hired McKinsey & Co. as an adviser. The company has started informing affected workers, The Inquirer reported.
"Comcast is fundamentally redesigning our organization to build a more agile company and better serve our customers," the company said in a statement that spokesperson John Demming shared with The Inquirer.
Citing Yahoo Finance, New Jersey 101.5 reported that Comcast shed 144,000 broadband and 274,000 cable TV customers nationwide during the third quarter. In June, the company announced plans to spin its NBCUniversal entertainment businesses off into a separate company and keep only broadband and wireless. That split needs regulatory approval and is expected to stretch into 2027, according to the outlets.
