Democrats unseat Atlantic County sheriff, clerk and three GOP commissioners
Unofficial, partial results show Republicans clinging to a one-seat majority on the county commission after the Nov. 3 vote. Democrats also captured the sheriff's and clerk's offices.
MAYS LANDING — Atlantic County Democrats defeated the Republican sheriff, the Republican county clerk and three Republican county commissioners in the Nov. 3 election, according to unofficial, partial results reported by New Jersey Globe.
The commission gains would cut the GOP's 8-1 edge on the nine-member Board of County Commissioners to 5-4. Some election districts had not yet reported, the Globe said.
Democrat Sean Riggin, Atlantic City's police director, beat Republican Sheriff Joe "Tokyo" O'Donoghue. With 55.86% of districts counted, Riggin had 36,984 votes, or 57.69%, to 27,123 for O'Donoghue, a margin of nearly 10,000. O'Donoghue won the office in 2023, unseating Democrat Eric Scheffler by 6 points in a rematch of their 2020 race.
Riggin, of Hamilton Township, was Pleasantville's police chief for six years, the Globe reported when he entered the race. "Public safety starts with listening, showing up, and building real relationships." Riggin said in a January campaign release.
Democrat Lisa Bender, a former Assembly candidate, led Republican Clerk Joseph Giralo 37,238 to 26,739. Giralo took the post in 2021 after Democratic Clerk Ed McGettigan did not seek another term. Republicans had won the clerk's office in 2021 and the sheriff's office in 2023; Democrats now appear set to hold both again.
In the two at-large commission races, Democrats Jonathan Marcellus, with 37,416 votes, and Kyle Gornick, with 37,276, topped Republican Commissioners John Risley, with 26,218, and June Byrnes, with 25,801. Marcellus, a small-business owner, is a Haitian immigrant and U.S. citizen. Gornick serves on the Atlantic City Planning Board and is a policy specialist for the state labor department, New Jersey Globe reported.
In the 3rd District, covering parts of Egg Harbor and Hamilton townships, Democrat Richard Healey, a human resources specialist, led Republican Commissioner Andrew Parker 7,141 to 4,544 with 30.43% of districts in.
Donald Trump carried Atlantic County by 3 points in 2024, the Globe reported.
