Cape May's mayor topples Rep. Van Drew, who admits defeat before race is called

The four-term Republican gave up his bid for a fifth term in New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District to Democrat Zack Mullock, even though no major news organization had yet declared a winner.

CAPE MAY — Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock, a Democrat, has unseated Republican U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew in New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District after the incumbent conceded on Tuesday night, Nov. 3, 6abc reported.

Van Drew had represented the South Jersey district for four terms and was asking voters to send him back for a fifth. His concession came before The Associated Press had declared a winner, according to 6abc. The station also reported that neither CBS News nor ABC News had projected a result at the time it published its story.

That leaves the outcome resting for now on Van Drew's own acknowledgment of defeat. No official tally had confirmed Mullock's win, and the vote counts circulating on election night were unofficial and incomplete.

Mullock marked the result in Cape May, where supporters gathered in the Magnolia Room of The Chalfonte Hotel, 6abc reported. Gov. Mikie Sherrill was on hand and introduced the mayor to the crowd, according to the station.

The defeat ends Van Drew's run in the seat and hands the district to a challenger whose political base is the Shore town he leads. Mullock will take the seat once the results are finalized.
