Rope team lifts two stranded women out of Borgata elevator shaft

Two Atlantic City firefighters descended about 190 feet on ropes to reach the women during an operation that ran nearly three hours. No one was hurt, the fire chief said.

ATLANTIC CITY — Atlantic City firefighters spent nearly three hours on Oct. 22 freeing two women from a stalled elevator in a blind shaft at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, and no one was injured, according to city officials as reported by three news outlets.

Firefighters Anthony Phillips and Brian Berrio rappelled about 190 feet down the shaft, and crews then hoisted the women up separately, according to a city statement published by WPG Talk Radio 95.5 FM and Shore Local Newsmagazine. The fire department said the job called for technical rope gear and a carefully coordinated vertical lift.

Crews were dispatched to the casino at about 5:23 p.m., the two outlets reported. The second woman reached safety at about 8:19 p.m., and the last firefighter climbed out three minutes later, the department said. New Jersey 101.5 gave a slightly different time, 8:20 p.m., for the second rescue.

"Rappelling 200 feet down an open, blind elevator shaft is one of the most demanding scenarios a firefighter can face. It requires absolute trust in your training and your gear," Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott Evans said in a statement released by the city. His figure rounds up the roughly 190-foot depth given in the city's account.

"Our crews did an outstanding job, and we are thankful for a safe resolution with zero injuries," Evans said in the statement, crediting the department's Special Operations team.

Deputy Chief Duane Brock had overall command, and Capt. Jeffrey Jenkins directed key parts of the work, according to the city's account. Rescue 1, Ladder 1 and Engine 2 responded. The department praised Jenkins, Phillips, Berrio, Brock and everyone who answered the call.

The women's names were not released, New Jersey 101.5 reported. None of the outlets said why the elevator stopped or included comment from the Borgata.
