Parkway crash in Toms River kills two, local news sites report

Three local outlets say two people died in the Saturday night wreck near milepost 87. Police had not publicly confirmed the deaths, and the victims have not been named.

TOMS RIVER — Two people were killed in a crash on the Garden State Parkway in Toms River on Saturday night, Oct. 24, according to three local news outlets. Police had not publicly confirmed the deaths.

The crash happened near milepost 87, The Lakewood Scoop and Lakewood Alerts reported. Lakewood Alerts placed it near Exit 88. RLS Media said it was in the northbound lanes, a short way past the Toms River toll plaza. RLS Media also reported that part of the northbound Parkway was shut down while authorities investigated and secured the scene.

The Lakewood Scoop cited preliminary information in its account of the crash. It reported that a tow truck had stopped in the road to protect a disabled car and that two vehicles then struck the tow truck. The site said a front-seat passenger in one of those vehicles was killed, along with the driver of the other. No other outlet has reported that account. RLS Media said the number of vehicles involved had not been confirmed.

Lakewood Alerts said Hatzolah members and other emergency crews treated several patients. It said two of them were first reported to be in cardiac arrest and that both were later confirmed dead. The Lakewood Scoop's first report described several people with serious injuries and said several Lakewood ambulances were sent. Its headline put the number hurt at two.

The outlets differ on timing. Lakewood Alerts said the crash happened about 10 p.m. RLS Media said crews were called about 10:54 p.m.

The victims have not been identified, and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

A man who said he was in the first car behind the crash told The Lakewood Scoop that he pulled over. He said he found a woman who was unresponsive but breathing. "I flew down to the car. I’m like, Are you okay? And she was still breathing," he told the outlet. "I have never felt so helpless in my life," he said. He said he plans to take a CPR course. "I feel like I could have saved a life," he said. The outlet did not name him.
