Camden man convicted of attempted murder in 2024 Atlantic City shooting

An Atlantic County jury found Ricardo Berrios, 40, guilty of shooting a man on Florida Avenue after a fistfight and of running a cocaine operation out of a motel room, prosecutors said. He faces up to two consecutive life terms.

An Atlantic County jury has convicted a Camden man of attempted murder in a July 2024 shooting in Atlantic City that left the victim needing multiple surgeries, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said Monday.

Ricardo Berrios, 40, was found guilty Oct. 15 of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree maintaining a narcotics production facility and more than two dozen other counts. These include second-degree aggravated assault, multiple weapons and drug distribution charges, and fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence, according to prosecutors. He was also found to be a persistent offender under state law because of his past criminal convictions, the office said.

Atlantic City police were called to a shooting on Florida Avenue on July 5, 2024, and found Antoyane McCall of Atlantic City with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and arm, prosecutors said. McCall was taken to the trauma unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Division, where he had several operations and survived.

According to prosecutors, evidence at trial showed Berrios shot McCall on the sidewalk after a fistfight between the two the evening of July 4, 2024. Hours after the shooting, police found Berrios at the Downbeach Inn in Atlantic City and arrested him on unrelated warrants, seizing heroin, fentanyl and cocaine he was carrying, prosecutors said. In the motel room where he had been staying, police found ammunition and evidence he was using the room to make cocaine, the office said. The handgun used in the shooting was recovered in Atlantic City on July 18, 2024.

Prosecutors said Berrios was under pretrial monitoring in a Mercer County case at the time and had seven pending charges in several counties. He has six prior convictions, according to the office.

Berrios has been held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility since his arrest. He faces a maximum of two consecutive life terms when he is sentenced Dec. 15 by Superior Court Judge Ralph Paolone.
