Atlantic City man pleads guilty to gun and drug charges after hotel arrest

Ezekiel Harper, 27, admitted to having a revolver and drugs later found to contain fentanyl and carfentanil when police found him at an Atlantic City hotel in July, prosecutors said. The plea calls for a five-year prison term.

ATLANTIC CITY — An Atlantic City man has pleaded guilty to gun and drug charges stemming from his arrest at a city hotel in July, prosecutors said Thursday.

Ezekiel Harper, 27, pleaded guilty Oct. 21 before Superior Court Judge Ralph Palone to second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm by a person barred from having weapons and third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, according to prosecutors.

Under the plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend a five-year state prison sentence, all of which Harper would have to serve before becoming eligible for parole.

On July 9, Atlantic City police identified Harper as a person of interest in an investigation and used surveillance to follow him to the Howard Johnson Hotel, prosecutors said. Officers went to the hotel to find him and approached him in the lobby.

Police got permission to search the hotel room where Harper was staying, along with a fanny pack in the room that officers had earlier seen him wearing, according to prosecutors. When officers spoke to him, Harper admitted there were drugs and a gun inside the fanny pack, prosecutors said.

Officers searching the fanny pack found a revolver and several wax folds, and Harper was arrested, prosecutors said. A lab later confirmed the wax folds contained fentanyl and carfentanil, according to prosecutors.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 15.
