Woodbury man pleads guilty in hatchet attack on brother in Weymouth Township

Daniel Gunson, 44, faces five years in state prison under a plea agreement after admitting he struck his brother in the back with a hatchet, prosecutors said.

WEYMOUTH TOWNSHIP — A Gloucester County man has pleaded guilty to attacking his brother with a hatchet in Weymouth Township in May, prosecutors said.

Daniel Gunson, 44, of Woodbury, pleaded guilty Oct. 22 to third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon before Superior Court Judge Joseph Levin, according to a release issued Monday. The plea agreement calls for a five-year state prison sentence.

On May 27, New Jersey State Police troopers were called to Grant Street and Blake Drive in Weymouth Township after a report of a man screaming in the road, prosecutors said. Troopers found the victim in the street wearing a bloody shirt.

While searching the area for a suspect, police found Gunson lying on his back in a parking lot with a hatchet on his chest, according to prosecutors. The victim, identified as Gunson's brother, had cuts to his back, a broken rib and a collapsed lung.

Gunson was arrested at the scene and later admitted striking his brother in the back with the hatchet, prosecutors said.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 12, 2027.
