Booker wins third term as Democrats flip two New Jersey House seats; Smith holds the Shore
Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock unseated Rep. Jeff Van Drew in South Jersey, while Rep. Chris Smith won a 24th term in a district that still swung toward Democrats.
TRENTON — New Jersey Democrats reelected U.S. Sen. Cory Booker on Tuesday and took two Republican-held House seats, including the South Jersey district that covers Cape May County and much of Atlantic County, leaving Rep. Chris Smith of the 4th District as the state's only Republican in Congress, according to results reported by The Associated Press and NBC News.
The results were part of a national wave in which Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate.
Senate
Booker, a Democrat and former Newark mayor, defeated Republican Justin Murphy, an attorney and former Tabernacle Township committeeman, to win his third full term, WHYY reported. Independent Veronica Fernandez and Socialist Workers Party candidate Joanne Kuniansky were also on the ballot. The AP called the race shortly after polls closed at 8 p.m.
With about 92% of the expected vote counted, Booker had 62.3% to Murphy's 35.1%, according to the NBC News Decision Desk. New Jersey has not elected a Republican senator since 1972.
2nd District: Van Drew concedes to Mullock
Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a Republican who has held the 2nd District seat since 2019, conceded to Democrat Zack Mullock, the mayor of Cape May, before the race was called. "I called Zack Mullock and I conceded his victory. He is and will be our new congressman for the next two years," Van Drew told supporters, 6abc reported.
The AP had not called the race as of Wednesday morning, and it was the only New Jersey contest still uncalled, NBC New York reported. With about 89% of the expected vote in, Mullock led 51.1% to 47.9%, with independent Ramon Mora Jr. at 1.1%, according to NBC News.
Mullock carried Atlantic and Cumberland counties, while Van Drew won Cape May County and the district's share of Ocean County by smaller margins than two years ago, SNJ Today reported. Van Drew had raised more than $2.4 million through Oct. 14, compared with less than $1 million for Mullock, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
4th District: Smith wins 24th term
Smith, a Manchester Republican first elected in 1981, defeated Democrat Rachel Peace in the 4th District, which covers parts of Monmouth and Ocean counties, the AP projected. With 96% of the expected vote counted, Smith had 59.1% to Peace's 40.9%, according to NBC News.
Smith won Ocean County's portion of the district with 62.8% but carried Monmouth County's portion with 52.6%, NBC News results show. He won the seat with 67.4% in 2024.
Elsewhere
In the 7th District in North and Central Jersey, Democrat Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, unseated Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr., the AP projected. Bennett had 57.1% to Kean's 41.4% with about 94% of the expected vote in, according to NBC News.
Democratic Reps. Herb Conaway in the 3rd District and Frank Pallone Jr. in the 6th District, which includes parts of Monmouth County, were projected winners, according to the NBC News Decision Desk. Conaway had 62.4% of the vote with 93% counted.
In the open 12th District, Democrat Adam Hamawy won the seat held by retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, SNJ Today reported. Three of the state's 12 House members will be new when the next Congress is sworn in Jan. 3.
