One killed, at least three wounded in shooting at Elizabeth vigil

Gunfire broke out Monday night as a large crowd gathered near Irvington Avenue. No arrests have been announced, and investigators are checking whether a burned car found in Newark is connected.

ELIZABETH — One person was killed and as many as four others were hurt when gunfire broke out during a vigil Monday night, officials told WABC-TV.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. near Irvington Avenue, where witnesses said a large crowd had gathered for the vigil. One person died at the scene, according to the station.

Three people were taken to University Hospital in Newark, officials said. One was shot in the chest, and two had gunshot wounds to the arms and legs. Their conditions were not released.

"A lot of shots were fired," a witness told WABC. Witnesses said they saw numerous orange evidence markers on the ground, with one estimating there were "upwards of 20."

Officials said a red sedan was seen heading west on Morris Avenue after the shooting. About an hour later, a red sedan was found burning on Hobson Street in Newark, and investigators are trying to determine whether it is connected, the station reported.

No arrests have been announced, and the victims have not been identified. Elizabeth police referred questions to the Union County Prosecutor's Office.

Early reports varied on how many people were shot. RLS Media, citing preliminary information, reported that as many as six people may have been wounded. Authorities had not released an official count as of Tuesday morning.
